I. The Second Coming of Christ

01Matthew 24:27 — Coming Like Lightning
"For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be."

Predicted: Christ's return will be sudden, visible, and unmistakable to all. Why unfulfilled: No universally witnessed, glorious return of Christ has occurred. See also: Luke 17:24; Revelation 1:7.

02Matthew 24:30-31 — The Sign and the Gathering
"And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other."

Predicted: A visible sign in heaven, worldwide mourning, and angels gathering God's elect at the trumpet's sound. Why unfulfilled: The tribes of the earth have not mourned at a visible coming, and no trumpet-gathering has taken place. (Preterists read much of Matthew 24 as fulfilled in AD 70; futurists see a still-future climax.) See also: Mark 13:26-27; 1 Thessalonians 4:16.

03Acts 1:11 — Return in Like Manner
"Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."

Predicted: Jesus will return bodily and visibly, in the same manner as His ascension. Why unfulfilled: The ascension was witnessed; no corresponding witnessed return has happened. See also: Zechariah 14:4; Revelation 1:7.

041 Thessalonians 4:16-17 — The Catching Away
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."

Predicted: The dead in Christ rise first; living believers are caught up to meet the Lord in the air. Why unfulfilled: No resurrection-and-catching-away of believers has occurred. (Timing relative to the Tribulation — before, during, or after — is one of the sharpest debates in eschatology.) See also: 1 Corinthians 15:51-52; John 14:3.

051 Corinthians 15:51-52 — Changed in a Moment
"Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed."

Predicted: An instantaneous transformation of believers' bodies at the last trumpet. Why unfulfilled: Believers still die in corruptible bodies; no such universal transformation has happened. See also: Philippians 3:21; 1 John 3:2.

06Revelation 19:11-16 — The Rider on the White Horse
"And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war... And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS."

Predicted: Christ returns as conquering King, judging and making war in righteousness, followed by heaven's armies. Why unfulfilled: No such open-heaven military return has taken place in history. See also: Psalm 2:8-9; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-8.

07Revelation 19:7-9 — The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
"Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of saints... Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb."

Predicted: A great wedding feast — the Lamb united with His bride, arrayed in white, and the blessed guests gathered in. Why unfulfilled: No such gathering has occurred; in Revelation's order it comes at Christ's return. (Debated: literal feast, symbol of eternal fellowship, or both.) See also: Matthew 22:2-14.

08Zechariah 14:4 — Feet on the Mount of Olives
"And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south."

Predicted: At His coming, Christ's feet touch the Mount of Olives, splitting it into a great valley. Why unfulfilled: The Mount of Olives stands unsplit to this day. See also: Acts 1:11-12; Zechariah 14:9.

092 Thessalonians 1:7-8 — Revealed in Flaming Fire
"And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Predicted: Christ revealed from heaven with angels, executing judgment in flaming fire. Why unfulfilled: No such open revelation with fiery judgment has occurred. See also: 2 Peter 3:7; Jude 1:14-15.
